There is a lot of advice out there on how to master the art of media relations. Much of it comes from editors who see the good, bad, and the ugly when it comes to pitches.

While they mean well, I have found that a lot of this advice does not necessarily reflect the reality of getting coverage month after month for clients, and the pressure that comes with it.

Tonight, I’m sharing my potentially unpopular responses to the top media relations platitudes with some help via GIFs from The Office.

“This Pitch Needs More Meat on the Bone”

My biggest win of the month came a few Friday nights ago. I knew an Editor in Chief was already a fan of my new client and sent her a single line email about having my client on the outlet’s podcast. By 7PM, I confirmed an episode and dedicated online feature in a Tier 1 publication. Obviously my knowledge of her interests accrued over many years was the value I brought, but it’s a crazy feeling to nail such an easy win while another pitch for the same client that I pored over with research, bullets, and interesting assets resulted in crickets. I guess like your favorite TikTok dating influencer says — if they wanted to, they would.
